Custom Japanese Oshima Tsumugi Silk Drum Lampshade Vintage 100% Silk Fabric 6–18”

A custom handmade drum lampshade created from beautiful vintage Japanese Honba Oshima Tsumugi silk, an exceptional traditional Japanese textile known for its intricate woven patterns and remarkably fine texture.

The original fabric label remains with the textile and identifies it as Honba Oshima Tsumugi (本場大島紬) and 100% silk. The certification label is from the Kagoshima Honba Oshima Tsumugi cooperative organization in Japan.

This particular silk features a sophisticated dark ground with a finely woven geometric pattern and subtle multicolored details. From a distance, the fabric reads as a rich, textural neutral; up close, the complexity of the weave becomes much more apparent. When the lamp is illuminated, the silk takes on additional warmth and depth.

Each lampshade is handmade to order in my Virginia workshop using this vintage Japanese silk.

Because these shades are being made from a finite piece of vintage fabric, quantities are limited and once the fabric is gone, it cannot necessarily be replaced.

Each shade is individually made, so pattern placement will vary slightly from shade to shade. This is part of the character of working with an original vintage textile rather than newly manufactured yardage.
