Rich, textural, and beautifully understated, this handmade drum lampshade is created from vintage Japanese tsumugi silk kimono fabric imported from Japan.

Tsumugi is prized for its distinctive woven texture and subtle irregularity, and this fabric has exactly the character that makes it so special. The warm rust-orange ground is crossed with organic vertical bands in brighter orange tones, giving the shade movement without feeling busy. Up close, the silk reveals a beautifully nubby, handwoven-looking surface with tiny variations that add depth and character.

The result is a lampshade that feels both refined and wonderfully earthy, with a look that can move easily between Japanese-inspired interiors, mid-century spaces, bohemian rooms, warm modern decor, and eclectic vintage settings.

Each shade is handmade by me in my Scottsburg, Virginia workshop using this genuine vintage kimono textile.

Because this is vintage silk, natural variations in weave, slubs, tiny flecks, and subtle irregularities are part of the fabric’s character rather than flaws. Pattern placement may also vary slightly from shade to shade depending on the size selected.
