Vintage Gourd Lamp: Boho Asian Accent Lighting
This is a very attractive Chinese porcelain double gourd (calabash) table lamp, most likely dating from the 1960s through the 1980s. The ceramic double gourd was made in Hong Kong.
The body is a double gourd (known as a hulu in Chinese), a shape that symbolizes: Good fortune, Health, Longevity, and Protection from illness.
The porcelain is decorated in a style inspired by famille rose enamels, with delicate pink peonies, gold scrolling vines, geometric border bands, with a restrained cream, gold, green, and blue palette.
The flower is almost certainly a peony, a symbol of prosperity, honor, and wealth in Chinese art. The style is based on older Qing Dynasty porcelain, although this lamp itself appears much newer.
The circular symbol on the upper bulb is the Chinese “Shou” (壽) longevity character which represents long life, blessings, and good health.
The lamp measures 28.75 inches tall and has a diameter of 6.5 inches.
Please note that the coord is in poor condition and it would benefit from re-wiring. This service can be provided for an extra fee.
